Looking To Let In Hexham?

Being a landlord brings its own demands, from tenant finding to maintenance and legal compliance. Our letting agents in Hexham are here to lift that burden, offering a range of property services tailored to your needs.

Whether you own a family home in Shaws Park or a flat near the town centre, we’ll ensure your investment works for you. Our services include full management and tenant vetting, delivered with the customer service we’re known for across the North East.

The transition of this business from one family owner to another was a smooth one, especially important to us as we did not live in Tynedale to meet the new owners. The team's advice, led by Jessica, in the letting and care of our Tynedale property is always professional and yet friendly.

Mr and Mrs S Vanistendael

Recently, I have had dealings with Anton Estates for the renting of a beautiful property in Northumberland. From the start of the process to the end, this was the most efficient housing company I have ever used. Quick, informative and correct. Within two weeks of viewing the property, I was moving in.

Fantastic, very professional.

Brian Reay

Both Jonathan and Bryony provided exceptional support throughout the purchase of our new home in Ingoe. This was a difficult transaction and their experience, negotiating skills and good humour were key to getting the purchase over the line.

Mr M Elliott

Anton Estates have supported us through two successive moves in the last 9 years. We have found Jonathan and the team friendly, professional, and committed to achieving the best outcome for us in some of the most challenging circumstances which can crop up during buying and selling property. We look forward to continuing to work together and would highly recommend Jonathan and his team.

Our Guide To Hexham

About Hexham

Hexham stands at the heart of the Tyne Valley, where the North Tyne and South Tyne rivers meet to form the main River Tyne a mile and a half northwest of the town. Positioned roughly midway between Newcastle and Carlisle, it serves as the principal market town for this part of Northumberland.

The town’s origins stretch back to AD 674, when St Wilfrid founded a monastery here, using stone salvaged from the nearby Roman fort at Corbridge. The crypt of Wilfrid’s original church survives beneath Hexham Abbey, which remains the focal point of the town and one of the North East’s most significant ecclesiastical buildings. The abbey sits on high ground overlooking the Market Place, where markets have been held since 1239.

Hexham bears the marks of its turbulent border history. William Wallace burned the town in 1297; Robert the Bruce extracted protection money in 1312; and the Battle of Hexham was fought nearby during the Wars of the Roses in 1464. The Moot Hall and the Old Gaol, England’s oldest purpose-built prison, date from the medieval period and stand close to the abbey.

Hexham offers a varied property stock, from Georgian townhouses clustered around the Market Place and Beaumont Street to Victorian terraces in the west end. Stone-built cottages with traditional features are common, while mid-century semi-detached houses can be found on roads such as Leazes Lane and in the Cockshaw area.

Modern developments have added detached family homes on the town’s eastern fringes, many offering views across the Tyne Valley. Period conversions, including apartments in former schools and ecclesiastical buildings, add further variety.

Best streets: Hextol Terrace commands elevated positions with views over the town, while Shaws Park offers larger detached family homes. Windsor Terrace and Crescent Avenue in the west end are popular for their proximity to schools and amenities. Leazes Lane, on the southern edge of the town, is regarded as one of the most desirable addresses for substantial detached properties.

Hexham is well served by road and rail, with direct links to Newcastle and Carlisle making it a practical base for commuters and visitors alike.

  • Car & Road: The A69 trunk road bypasses the town to the north, connecting Hexham to Newcastle (around 22 miles east) and Carlisle (approximately 37 miles west). The journey to Newcastle takes roughly 30 minutes by car under normal conditions. The A69 is dual carriageway for approximately 20 miles from Newcastle to the Hexham bypass, with single carriageway continuing westward.
  • Train: Hexham Station sits on the Tyne Valley Line, operated by Northern Trains. Services run every 30 minutes to Newcastle, with the fastest journey taking around 31 minutes. Trains also run westward to Carlisle, taking approximately 45-50 minutes. From Newcastle, connections are available to London King’s Cross, Edinburgh, Leeds and York. From Carlisle, passengers can reach Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham.

Hexham offers a wealth of historic sites, cultural attractions and outdoor spaces, making it appealing to those considering the area as home.

  • Hexham Abbey – Founded in AD 674, this is one of Britain’s earliest Christian sites. The Anglo-Saxon crypt, medieval painted panels and the 7th-century Frith Stool are among its notable features. Entry to the abbey is free, with a visitor exhibition and café on site.
  • Hexham Old Gaol – Built in 1333, this is England’s oldest purpose-built prison. The four-storey museum explores medieval crime and punishment, the Border Reivers and local history.
  • The Moot Hall – A 15th-century gatehouse and tower on the Market Place, originally part of the town’s defences and later used as a courthouse.
  • Queen’s Hall Arts Centre – This Victorian building houses a 350-seat theatre, galleries and a studio space, hosting drama, music, comedy and exhibitions throughout the year.
