Our Guide To Corbridge

Corbridge is one of the most attractive villages in the whole of Northumberland as well as one of the most historic. With its beautiful stone-built architecture, array of independent shops, good local schools and pretty riverside walks, Corbridge is a popular choice for many people seeking to buy or rent.

Situated just off the A69 and with its own train station, Corbridge is also a good option for commuters east and west. It also has a range of property types so whether you’re looking for a period home with original features or a modern new-build, there is something to suit everyone.

Corbridge is one of the most historic villages in Britain. Once the most northerly town in the Roman Empire, ‘Corstopitum’ served the soldiers on Hadrian’s Wall – Corbridge Roman Town is now an English Heritage site just over a mile outside Corbridge village centre.

Here, you can see how people lived, worked and worshipped. The ‘Corbridge Hoard’ is here too. Discovered in 1964, it remains one of the most important archaeological finds from Roman Britain.

You’re spoilt for choice with local hostelries – CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) lists seven, one dating back to 1300, and several serve imaginative gastro-pub fare. Popular with visitors are The Angel of Corbridge and The Black Bull. Corbridge is home to the Tynedale Beer Festival – a must for real ale fans in June.

There are good restaurants, including two Italians and several Indian restaurants, one offering a ‘curry train’ from Newcastle, featured on Michael Portillo’s Great British Railway Journeys. There’s a wealth of cafes and tea shops too as befits a destination village like Corbridge. These include the long-established Watling Coffee House and Tea & Tipple.

Corbridge Station is served by both Northern Line and TransPennine Express trains with regular services along the picturesque Tyne Valley line. Corbridge to Newcastle takes 37 minutes and Hexham is just six minutes away by train. Trains to Carlisle take an hour.

There are frequent bus services to Newcastle, Hexham and Carlisle and around the Tyne Valley.

Corbridge boasts an impressive range of shops. The village centre has a Co-op supermarket that opens 7am to 10pm seven days a week. For specialist and locally sourced food, there’s Corbridge Larder, which also has the Heron Cafe upstairs. There’s also a butcher’s, a greengrocer’s and an award-winning bakery. Corbridge is also famous for Brocksbushes Farm Shop on the A69/A68 Styford roundabout, where you can even pick your own fruit and veg!

The village is also home to a range of excellent independent shops, including the thriving bookshop, Forum Books, which hosts author events; several men’s and ladies’ outfitters and several vintage/antique stores.

The nearest general hospital with an urgent treatment centre is in Hexham but there is Corbridge Health Centre in Newcastle Road with is a GP practice.

Aside from Corbridge Roman Town, there are plenty of other attractions for residents. It is easy to access beautiful paths along the River Tyne, popular with dog walkers and people doing the River Tyne Trail and the nearest remains of Hadrian’s Wall are just four miles north. Hexham and its Abbey are within easy reach.

Little Tinklers is a private day nursery in Corbridge for birth to four years.

Corbridge C of E First School – motto, ‘be the best that we can be’ has a Forest School and a pre-school nursery for children turning two in the year they start.

Corbridge Middle School caters for nine-13-year-olds and feeds into Queen Elizabeth High School, Hexham, which has a Sixth Form.

The nearest independent fee-paying school is Mowden Hall (part of the Prep Schools Trust), which is four miles away and open to boarding and day pupils, nursery to 13.

I have used the services of Anton Estates for many years on a personal basis for both the letting of residential property and also residential property sales. The service from both front and back office has been excellent and the recent new management changes have added an up to date feel.

D Gibson

Anton Estates sold my mother’s house in Corbridge recently. They were very professional and helpful throughout. Emma was an absolute star and worked very hard to finalise the sale. We cannot recommend them highly enough and we will definitely use them in the future.

Mr M Pitkethly

Recently, I have had dealings with Anton Estates for the renting of a beautiful property in Northumberland. From the start of the process to the end, this was the most efficient housing company I have ever used. Quick, informative and correct. Within two weeks of viewing the property, I was moving in.

MalonskiTenant

Both Jonathan and Bryony provided exceptional support throughout the purchase of our new home in Ingoe. This was a difficult transaction and their experience, negotiating skills and good humour were key to getting the purchase over the line.

Mr M Elliott

Can’t praise Emma highly enough for all of her work. Emma made a stressful situation as easy as it could possibly be for me and can only hope to use her again in the future.
