Our Guide To Riding Mill

Riding Mill is a leafy, picturesque village on the south bank of the River Tyne, 16 miles west of Newcastle. It has a strong sense of community with not one but two village halls offering a wide range of activities and there’s an historic pub, The Wellington Inn, as well as a deli café at the railway station where you can stock up on essentials.

Riding Mill has good road links onto the A69 and A68. The drive to Newcastle takes around 30 minutes.

Riding Mill train station has regular Northern Line and TransPennine Express services along the Tyne Valley Line. Trains take 35 minutes on average into Newcastle and an hour into Carlisle.

An hourly bus service (Go North East Tyne Valley 10) usually takes between 1 hour, 3 minutes and 1 hour, 7 minutes from Riding Mill to Newcastle but early morning journeys can be as little as 52-56 minutes. There’s a bus to Hexham every half hour which takes between 15-20 minutes.

The closest supermarket to Riding Mill is the Co-op in neighbouring Corbridge which opens 7am-10pm seven days a week. However the deli on Riding Mill station sells fresh milk, bread and eggs, as well as food cupboard essentials and cleaning items.  It also offers home deliveries. For bigger supermarkets, head to Waitrose, Tesco, Aldi or Lidl in Hexham.

Riding Mill’s two village halls are the beating heart of the community with everything from Pilates classes to pot luck lunches. There really is something to suit all ages – take a look at the regular groups page to see what’s on offer.

The Wellington Hotel is open seven days a week from 11am to 11pm. It has an extensive menu, including good Sunday lunch options and is dog-friendly. The Deli At The Station – also dog-friendly – is the little sister of Corbridge Larder and offers a breakfast and lunch menu and homemade cakes and scones. There’s also tasty bakes at the volunteer-run Café at the Foyer in Riding Mill Parish Hall Mondays and Fridays between 10am and noon.

Riding Mill lies on the south bank of the Tyne, five miles from Hexham. The corn mill which gave it its name faces the Wellington Hotel. There’s been a mill here since medieval times although the current building dates back to the late 18th or early 19th century and is now a private residence.

The Wellington is an historic building itself. Dating back to 1660, legend has it that witch covens met here, with an account recorded by the Morpeth Charter Sessions from 1673 of a case that thankfully ended in acquittal.

Vestiges of the Roman road, Dere Street, that ran between Corbridge and York remain in the form of a grassy bank in the fields to the west of the village.

There are lots of lovely walks around Riding Mill which can be found on the parish council website. The Church of England has a retreat house, Shepherd’s Dene, just a mile outside Riding Mill which offers afternoon teas at certain times of the year and a programme of events.

Riding Mill Outdoor Pre School offers outdoor learning for two-to-five- year-olds from 8am to 5pm term time.

Broomhaugh First School is a Church of England school in Riding Mill that typically feeds into Corbridge Middle School, followed by Queen Elizabeth High School, Hexham. It has beautiful mature grounds that enables it to incorporate Forest School learning.

Pupils would typically progress to Corbridge Middle School before transitioning to Queen Elizabeth High School, which has a sixth form.

Mowden Hall Preparatory School, near Corbridge, provides private education from nursery up to age 13.

Recently, I have had dealings with Anton Estates for the renting of a beautiful property in Northumberland. From the start of the process to the end, this was the most efficient housing company I have ever used. Quick, informative and correct. Within two weeks of viewing the property, I was moving in.
